Newsradio WRVA Provides Free Prostate Screenings During its Second Annual “Hitting Prostate Cancer Out of the Park”

Newsradio WRVA (WRVA-AM / WTVR-HD2), an Audacy station in Richmond, partnered with Virginia Urology, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, and Fans for the Cure to host its second annual “Hitting Prostate Cancer Out Of The Park.” The event delivered over 70 free prostate screenings, directly addressing a critical community health gap for men facing financial barriers or a lack of insurance.

“I am deeply grateful to everyone behind the scenes who worked tirelessly to bring this initiative together,” said Rich Herrera, Morning News Host, Newsradio WRVA. “Being rooted in the communities we serve is at the heart of what we do. Local radio has the power to save lives, and through this event, we helped a listener discover a cancer he didn’t know he had.”

Herrera, who hosts “Richmond’s Morning News” weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. ET has always encouraged men to get screened, but his efforts intensified last year after President Biden’s diagnosis received heightened attention. The community reacted to the story, and the push for Herrera became actionable when a listener shared that he faced financial strain and would always choose to feed his children rather than pay for a screening. Determined to eliminate that barrier, Herrera teamed up with Fans for the Cure, an organization that leverages baseball for health outreach, to launch the inaugural event, which provided 49 free screenings in its first year.

The life-saving impact of that launch came full circle when a listener later approached Herrera at a community event earlier this year. Uninsured and struggling financially, the man had attended the screening after hearing about it on WRVA. His results indicated critical PSA levels, leading to an early diagnosis, timely treatment, and ultimately a cancer-free outcome.
