Boston’s Sports Radio Weei 93.7 Named Winner Of The 2012 Global Lung Cancer Coalition Journalism Award
Station earns prestious honor for coverage of lung cancer during 2012 Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon
BOSTON, MA – Sports Radio WEEI 93.7 was honored last night as the recipient of the 2012 Global Lung Cancer Coalition Journalism Award for the station’s coverage of lung cancer during the Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon. The award was accepted by Jason Wolfe, VP of Programming and Operations for Entercom Boston, at the Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil in Boston held at the Prudential Center.
The Global Lung Cancer Coalition (GLCC) promotes worldwide understanding of the burden of lung cancer and the right of patients to effective early detection, better treatment and supportive care, with a commitment to improving disease outcomes for all. Each year, GLCC, through its 31 members in 22 countries, recognizes outstanding journalistic efforts with this award.
WEEI-FM was recognized with the 2012 Global Lung Cancer Coalition Journalism Award for extensive coverage of lung cancer awareness through the station’s 2012 Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon, which took place August 21-22, 2012. Previous U.S. award winners have included Katie Couric of CBS and Richard Knox at NPR.
“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by the Global Lung Cancer Coalition and I’m so proud to accept this award on behalf of all of us at WEEI,” said Jason Wolfe, VP of Programming and Operations for Entercom Boston. “Cancer affects us all, and we are blessedto have had such tremendous success raising awareness of this terrible disease through the efforts of the Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon. I want to thank everyone at the GLCC for their support. It means a great deal to our entire staff.”
The representatives of the four U.S.-based GLCC organizations – The National Lung Cancer Partnership, CancerCare, Prevent Cancer Foundation and Lung Cancer Alliance – comprised the review committee for the 2012 U.S. awards, which included stories produced from November 2011 through September 2012.
“The U.S. representatives of GLCC celebrate WEEI’s coverage of lung cancer,” said Maureen Rigney, Director of Community and Support Services for the Lung Cancer Alliance. “The interviews with survivors, leading oncologists and other healthcare professionals not only educate the public about the disease but also give hope and encouragement to lung cancer patients and their loved ones.”
