Podcasting’s Demo Plot Twist

By Audacy Insights Team [Excerpts from State of Audio]

The most valuable advertising audience in podcasting right now isn’t who you think it is. And if your media plan is still built around the listener who showed up first, you’re already behind.

Podcasting is no longer just for the Millennial white guy. The audience who built this medium (and we say this with love) was a pretty specific slice of America: educated, male, probably somewhere in his early 30s, very into long-form interviews. That guy is still here. But he’s got a lot of company.

Gen Z Has Entered the Villa

These young adults are hyperconnected, but notoriously hard to catch. Over 35 million Gen Z Americans now listen to podcasts monthly, making it one of their top media formats. By 2029, Gen Z and Gen Alpha will make up 40% of the entire podcast audience. To reach these audiences, trend-chasing doesn’t cut it anymore. Authenticity does. And that’s the plot twist: for this generation allergic to anything that feels fake, podcasting is winning because it’s built on trust.

Here’s what’s interesting about how Gen Z discovers podcasts: it starts on the platforms they’re already on. YouTube is the top discovery channel at 28%, followed by social media at 26%. They’re not necessarily looking for podcasts — podcasts are finding them through clips, recommendations, and the people they trust. Which means video and social aren’t just promotional tools for podcast shows. They’re the front door.

Built for Her

Women didn’t suddenly discover podcasts. Podcasts finally started speaking to women. Their listenership has tripled over the past decade, fueled by relatable hosts and communities built around shared experiences. Not only are women listening, but podcast ads are also officially the best way to get their attention. Women are significantly more likely to recall an ad heard during a podcast compared to any other media channel.

The Multi-Cultural Shift

Podcasting has become more reflective of America itself. Latino podcast consumption jumped from 43% to 60% in just two years. Black American listenership is on the rise too. These aren’t niche audiences finding niche content — they’re mainstream listeners claiming a medium that’s making room for them.

The audience evolved. Gen Z, women, and multicultural audiences have made this medium their own. And they didn’t just bring their ears. They brought their wallets — and their loyalty.

For brands, that’s the real pivot. The podcast listener you’ve been trying to reach on social, on streaming, on every platform where they’re actively avoiding you? They’re here. They’re listening. And unlike almost everywhere else in media, they’re actually paying attention to the ads.
